Planning and implementation

1 min read planning, workflow, focus

Why planning and implementation need separate mindsets.

Planning and implementation are different jobs, even when they happen on the same project. Planning is where to decide on the next chunk of work, and it is also where to define what success looks like. Implementation is where to stay with that chunk instead of switching back into planning mode.

The point is to wear a different hat in each phase. Planning needs a planning mindset, and implementation needs an implementation mindset.

That separation also helps with Periodic idea transfer: capture the idea first, then come back to it when planning returns. Sometimes the right move is to leave the idea alone until the planning hat comes back on, not to turn every new thought into a new chunk of work immediately.

The planning pass is often easier away from the computer, with paper or sticky notes instead of another screen. That is why Physical planning helps.
